Fresh Cows and Ketosis Especially common after a long dry period and being over-conditioned, ketosis can make a newly fresh cow much more susceptible to other conditions common in the transition period, such as a displaced abomasum. Their inability to produce and sustain proper glucose levels leads them to metabolize fat improperly, leading to sharply increased blood ketones, severe and rapid weight loss, and off-feed condition. It is part of a triad of ills, metritis, ketosis and displaced abomasums that cause the bulk of fresh cow illness. Maintaining DM intake is essential(and successful)in keeping these diseases to a minimum.
The triad approach is most useful and it addresses the correction of the low glucose cow in a 1)fast-acting 2)moderate acting, and 3)long-acting fashion, by using certain and limited amounts of IV dextrose, Propylene Glycol(PPG)based drenches, and systemic steroids(dexamethasone/isoflupredone) respectively. Example treatment: 1. IV dextrose 250ml ONLY w/6ml Vit B12 added 1-2 days - anything over 250ml of dextrose is wasted and excreted out via the kidneys of the cow. The extra dextrose can also cause a spike in insulin secretion, increase chance of dehydration and lower the serum level of phosphorus. Be cautious and avoid excessive use of dextrose. Also do NOT save the unused portion of dextrose - it is too easily contaminated and saving the extra 1-2$ is not worth the many potential problems it can cause. 2. Drench with NiaDrench PO daily 3 days 200-300ml/dose 3. 10ml PreDef2X or dexamethasone(not for pregnant cows)given IM once This treatment should NOT be used without proper diagnosis or consultation with your veterinarian. |
