New Jersey State Polled Hereford Association

                            1999 Winter Newsletter

Who can believe its already here? Where did 1998 go?

I’d like to say a special congratulations to NJPHA treasurer, and my parents, Pete and Carol Staats who welcomed their first grandchild, William Ezra Staats on December 18, 1998. Proud parents are Ed and Judy Staats, who live over at Four Oaks Farm.

We have started our 1999 calving season with the uneventful arrival of a Coon Eyes bull calf. I hope that those of you who have begun calving are having good luck. The weather is making any barn work challenging. The start of calving season has served me as a reminder to get started on this years events. We have a great deal to be proud of, so we need to show it off a bit.

During our last NJPHA general membership meeting, we set up a committee to look into the feasibility of sponsoring a Polled Hereford Sale here in the state. This will be a huge undertaking and will rely heavily on membership participation to even get beyond the talking stage. We welcome any thoughts or ideas you have.

Once again I ask that anyone that has anything they’d like included in this newsletter to pass it along to me. You’ll notice in this newsletter business card ads appearing for the first time. The cost is $6 per issue or $20 for the year. Send your cards and checks to Gail Kniffen. The ads should be print ready.

See you all soon

Joanne Powell

NJPHA President

LES MIDDLETON

It is with great sadness that I report the death of former AHA fieldman Les Middleton of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Les died in an automobile accident on December 15, 1998, at age 60.

Les worked with many different purebred beef cattle herds including the University of Missouri, Malinmor Farms, Keithley Hereford Farms, Pharris Farms, and C-Ranch. He also served as an instructor of equine sciences and rodeo team coach at Sul Ross State University, Alpine Texas. Middleton was the manager of the Ohio State University beef and sheep centers.

He was the president of the Missouri PHA, the Northeast Missouri PHA , the Northeast Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association, and Pike County Cattlemen’s Association.

He was an advisor for 4-H clubs and cattle youth organizations. He was a member of the Camden United Methodist Church and Perserverance Masonic Lodge.

Les is survived by wife Nancy; one daughter, Toni Day, three sons, Roy, Bobby and Joe; two sisters; and three grandchildren.

Les was a great friend to the NJPHA, and a memorial contribution to the Ed Bible scholarship fund has been made on behalf of our membership in Les’ name.

Veterinary Notes

This month's veterinary column by Dr. Jon Higgins covers the seasonal topic of preventing and treating problems with calf scours. Since most of you will be doing the bulk calving in the next few weeks into next month, now is a good time to review your procedures for optimal performance of your new crop.
